Run the wire hanger on the top of the birdhouse through a piece of rubber hosing to protect the tree from wire cuts. If the birdhouse does not have a hanger, screw an eye screw into the top of the box and run a piece of rubber-covered wire through the eye screw to hang the box.
A birdhouse with a small hole can deter bird predators better than any natural nesting cavity out there. Look for trees with a diameter greater than 4" to mount your birdhouses and be sure to remove the screws if you ever take down the birdhouse.
